Play the Tomah Way: On the Lake!

Located on the west side of Tomah, Wisconsin, Lake Tomah spans roughly 245 acres with a maximum depth of about 19 feet, offering a serene retreat with a variety of recreational opportunities. Created in the late 1930s from donated land, it is now a community hub for summer fun.

Outdoor Adventures: Boating, Paddling & Fishing

With two public boat ramps and a handicap-accessible dock, Lake Tomah invites enthusiasts of all levels to enjoy boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing. Pulling a tube or wakeboard is a fantastic way to enjoy the lake, but if you are looking for a quiet paddle, the south end of the lake is no-wake for a slower pace.

For anglers, the lake teems with panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike, plus DNR health checks confirm a thriving fish population. Local anglers report regular catches, making this a go-to spot for both casual casting and more serious fishing sessions. Whether bank-fishing from a park lawn, throwing a line off the dock, or trolling in a boat, there’s always a chance for a rewarding catch.

Surrounding Parks: More Than Just Lake Views

Tomah’s Parks & Recreation Department maintains several inviting green spaces around Lake Tomah.

  • Winnebago Park: Boasting a double boat ramp, kayak launch, handicap-accessible fishing pier, pavilions, volleyball, walking trails, fitness stations, and more. Add to that the Winnebago Wonderland, an awesome playground structure, and it makes a perfect family outing.
  • Butts Park / North American Squirrel Association Inclusive Park: Features an all-abilities playground, accessible shelter, fishing pier, restroom facilities, and picnic amenities—all designed for universal access.
  • City of Tomah Recreation Trail: These parks form part of a city-wide trail that connects playgrounds, waterfronts, picnic areas, and fitness features along the lake shore.

Tomah n.a.s.a. & the S.S. Squirrel Accessible Pontoon

Tomah n.a.s.a., the local branch of the North American Squirrel Association, empowers seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities to enjoy “land, sea, and air” outdoor recreation. One of their standout offerings is the S.S. Squirrel, a barrier-free pontoon boat launched in 2018, fully equipped with a roll‑on ramp, canopy, wheelchair capacity, life jackets, and guided captains.

The boat is available free of charge to eligible users, including vetrans, individuals with disabilities, those 72+, plus their families, elderly community groups, and schools. Reservations start May 1, capped at twice per month for each user, and run from early June through early fall.
